Wolverines Coaching in NFL; A Look Back at Week 15, 2013

Fergodsakes.com reviews the action from NFL football games this past weekend involving a University of Michigan Wolverines football coaching connection. On the coaching staffs of various NFL teams are former Michigan players and assistant coaches.

Terry Malone (Offensive Line Coach 1997-2001; Offensive Coordinator 2002-2005): now Tight Ends Coach, New Orleans
The Saints, 10-4, fell to St. Louis 27-16. New Orleans is 2nd in the NFL in passing yards per game (308); and 10th in the NFL in points per game (26).

Jim Harbaugh (quarterback 1982-86): Senior with Team 107. Now Head Coach of San Francisco 49ers.
The 49ers, 10-4, defeated Tampa Bay 33-14. San Francisco has rushed for 137 yards per game, 5th in the NFL. They have given up 16 points per game, 3rd in the league.

Harold Goodwin (offensive lineman 1992-94): now Offensive Coordinator, Arizona Cardinals
The Cardinals are 9-5 after a 37-34 overtime victory over Tennessee. Goodwin’s offense is averaging 24 points per game, 15th in the NFL.

Teryl Austin (DB Coach 1999-2002); and
Andy Moeller (linebacker 1982-86; Offensive Line Coach 2000-07):
Now with the defending Super Bowl Champion Baltimore Ravens, Austin as the Secondary Coach; Moeller as the Offensive Line Coach.
Baltimore is 8-6 after a 18-16 win over Detroit. Austin’s secondary is part of a defense giving up an average of 20 points per game, 7th in the NFL. Moeller’s offensive line has contributed to the Ravens rushing for only 83 yards per game, 29th in the NFL.

Mike Trgovac (defensive lineman 1977-80): Senior with Team 101. Now Green Bay Packers Defensive Line Coach.
Green Bay, 7-6-1, defeated Dallas in an amazing comeback, 37-36. The Packers (and Trgovac’s defensive line) are allowing 123 rushing yards per game, 25th in the NFL.

Jim Herrmann (linebacker 1979-82; coach 1988-2005, including Def Coord 1997-2005): now Linebackers Coach, New York Giants; and
Jerald Ingram (running back 1979-83): Senior with Team 104. Now Running Backs Coach, New York Giants
The Giants, 5-9, lost to Seattle 23-0. New York is 28th in the league in rushing yards per game (84), and have given up the 26 points per game, 20th in the NFL.

Tyrone Wheatley (running back 1991-94): Senior with Team 115. Now Running Backs Coach, Buffalo Bills; and
Kurt Anderson (offensive lineman 1997-2001): Senior with Team 122. Now Offensive Quality Control Coach, Buffalo Bills
The Bills, 5-9, defeated Jacksonville 27-20. Wheatley’s running backs are 4th in the league in rushing yards, averaging 138 yards per game.

Bill Sheridan (OLB Coach 2002; D Line Coach 2003-04): now Tampa Bay Buccaneers Defensive Coordinator.
Tampa Bay, 4-10, fell to San Francisco 33-14. Sheridan’s defense has allowed 23 points per game, 13th in the NFL.

Mike Mallory (linebacker 1981-85): Senior with Team 106. Now Special Teams Coordinator, Jacksonville
The Jaguars, 4-10, fell to Buffalo 27-20. Jacksonville is 7th in average kickoff return (25.4 yards per return).
